Welcome to Rick Hickmann Art Glass!
I hope to share with you my love of stained glass. I view my glass work as an art form so every design is my own creation and I do not repeat designs in my windows. I enjoy the challenge of creating a work that becomes a part of the personality of the clients and also fits in with the interior decorating. Feel free to make comments, ask questions, or critique any of my postings. If you click on the slideshow to the right you can view the pictures in a larger format.

Poppies window
Linda's Poppies window
2007
Linda wanted a hanging window of poppies.
She said she really likes it but it was not what
she had in mind. I think I took over this project
instead of listening and working on what she
had in mind. I'm sure that is because we have
been married long enough now I think I know
what she wants. A serious mistake to figure
that!

Sam and Barbara Roth- Concord, California 2007
The Roth's had this old wood window frame and wanted some stained glass in each section. The challenge in this project was that it was going to be hung on a wall, with no backlighting. Not prime conditions for stained glass. I had to carefully choose glass that had enough character on its own to make it work. Here I have one example on a wall and the other sitting in a window to show how backlighting changes the window. I am pleased with the results even though I was not convinced stained glass would work well hanging on a wall.

Hyde's Window
Robert and Danielle Hyde residence 2006
"In fall 2006 we had just finished a major renovation and remodel on our 35 year old Bend residence. The last thing we needed was a focus for our entry- we wanted beveled glass but a pattern that would combine the Tuscan feel or our new home with the 70's feel of our old home. We worked with Rick for several weeks- gave him our ideas and let him go with his own intereptation of design. This was hard for my architect husband but ultimately the best way since Rick came up with a design that captured the essence of our home. It is the first thing you see and sets the tone not only for the entry but for the house as a whole. The window Rick designed and built is the last thing we see when we leave our home and the first thing we see when we enter our home and it brings us joy each and every time!"

Jeanne Burk- Mountains 2007
Jeanne had a scene in mind of mountains with blue and yellow in the foreground. She saw a photo of a meadow with blue wildflowers and had me see what she had in mind. We worked together discussing using other colors. We ended up deciding on a darker more stormy sky with the blue on the right and a brighter sky and brighter colors to the left. I also chose Uboros glass which is the only glass with seven colors so it literally changes colors in different light. On cloudy days or as the sun sets you don't get the bright yellow. In full sun the reds and yellows jump out. It is really enjoyable to sit relax and enjoy the changing colors.

Introduction
I started doing stained glass in 1973. An art instructor I had at American River College in Sacramento showed me the basics. I then moved to Pocatello Idaho and went to Idaho State University. While there I started taking some of my work to local art/ craft fairs. I started getting requests for custom designed work.
